Charles Matta, FAIA is the National Director for Federal Buildings and Modernizations in GSA's Office of the Chief Architect. He oversees a program consisting of approximately 120 buildings currently in various stages of planning, design and construction with a value exceeding $5 billion. He has represented the office on Design Excellence Peer Reviews and AE Selection Panels for Federal facilities and has served as the agency’s lead or co-lead on key initiatives including DrCHECKS, Total Building Commissioning, AIA Continuing Education, and BIM (Building Information Modeling) – a ground-breaking program that garnered numerous federal and corporate awards, including the CoreNet Global Innovator's Award and the 2007 GSA Achievement Award for Real Property Innovation. Before joining GSA’s Office of the Chief Architect in 2002, Charles established ‘Matta Architects’ (1994- 2002), an Arlington, Virginia, based firm with a diversified practice in municipal, recreational, and residential projects. His work has been published in the Washington Post, the Washington Times, House and Garden, Inform, Builder, and Remodeling magazines. Charles is also the recipient of several AIA and design industry awards including AIA Award for Excellence in Architecture for an embassy project in Washington, DC.
