Architect, consultant, and author, Barbara A. Nadel, FAIA, specializes in planning and design of justice, healthcare, and secure institutional facilities. Since founding Barbara Nadel Architect (BNA) in 1992, she has provided programming, security planning, master planning, design, operational and facility analysis, value engineering, expert witness, building analysis reports, and editorial services to U.S. and global clients. She was 2001 AIA National Vice President and 2002 Chair of the national AIA Academy on Architecture for Justice. She served on the AIA National Board of Directors and serves as a board member to the International Archive of Women in Architecture. Nadel is editor in chief of "Building Security: Handbook for Architectural Planning and Design" (McGraw-Hill, 2004), translated to Chinese in 2005. She is consulting managing editor for Continuing Education at Architectural Record, and writes a monthly security column at www.buildings.com. Her articles have appeared in over 100 magazines, books and websites, including Architectural Record, Engineering News-Record, Construction Specifier, and BUILDERnews. She has been quoted and featured in over 100 domestic and global media outlets, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, CNN, AP, UPI, Salon, and others. Nadel has been a keynoter, panelist, and moderator, for over 50 groups in the U.S. and Canada since 9/11/2001 on security design and disaster planning, including at seven AIA National Conventions; City of Arlington, Virginia; Government of Ontario, Canada, Swedish Embassy; Smithsonian Institute, Texas Society of Architects, AIA South Dakota, legal, civic, academic, arts, security/intelligence, and religious organizations. She has spoken at many industry programs and events, including for ASID, ASLA, CSI, IFMA, and The Infrastructure Security Partnership.
