Editor, writer, and consultant Michael Tardif conducts interdisciplinary research in architecture, engineering, business management, construction, community planning, information technology, and sustainable design. He aims to foster a better understanding of how the built environment is created and sustained by engaging both building industry professionals and the general public in a thoughtful and provocative dialogue. He writes and speaks frequently for both professional and general audiences on the topics of architecture, building information modeling, building industry technology standards, business and financial management, interoperability, marketing, planning, and workflow management. Michael is a contributing editor for AIArchitect and DigitalPractice.info with a focus on business practices and design technology. His work has also appeared in professional publications such as CE News, The Big Project (published in Dubai, UAE) and OnSite, the quarterly real estate magazine of the Washington Business Journal, and in consumer publications such as ArchitectureDC, Bethesda Magazine, New Old House, Washingtonian, and Waterfront Home & Design. He is the co-author, with Steve L. Wintner, AIA, of Financial Management for Design Professionals: The Path to Profitability. He is currently collaborating with Deke Smith, AIA, on his second book, Building Information Modeling: A Strategic Implementation Guide for Architects, Engineers, Constructors, and Real Estate Asset Managers, to be published in early 2009. Michael is the former director of the AIA Center for Technology and Practice Management. During his five-year tenure he served as a contributing editor for technology of The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice, 13th edition, and wrote or edited over 250 AIA Best Practices articles. He is also the former Editorial Director, Best Practices, for ZweigWhite, where he edited four professional/technical books, including the Insider's Guide to SF330 Preparation, a comprehensive guide for design professionals on the federal procurement of professional design services. He recently served as consulting Information Technology Project Manager for the National Institute of Building Sciences for the agcXML Project. Michael studied both civil engineering and architecture as an undergraduate and has fifteen years of experience as a project designer and project manager for architecture firms with a portfolio of completed projects that includes residential, commercial, and institutional buildings; health care facilities; and places of worship. He is an associate member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and a professional member of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), the buildingSMART Alliance, the Sustainable Business Network of Washington, and Washington Independent Writers. In 2003, he was named an honorary lifetime member of the Society of Design Administration in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of design firm management.
